How it is calculated
How is compound interest calculated?
Each month, what you already have grows at the equivalent monthly return and, at the end of the month, the contribution is added. The monthly return is the one that, repeated twelve times, gives exactly the annual % you entered: (1 + r) to the power of 1/12, minus 1. That way the return on the return also works, which is why the light bar grows faster and faster.
Why does time matter more than the %?
€200 a month for 30 years at 7% comes to about €234,000, of which you put in 72,000. The same €200 for 15 years comes to about 62,000. Half the time does not give half the money: it gives a quarter, because the last years are the ones that grow most.
What does this calculator NOT measure?
No market returns the same % every year. This is arithmetic, not a forecast: the real path will have good years and bad years, and the end result may land above or below. Nor does it take off fees or taxes, which over the long run eat a sizeable share.
How does inflation affect it?
A million thirty years from now does not buy what a million buys today. The “in today's money” column divides each year by cumulative inflation, so you see purchasing power and not just the number.
