Frequently asked questions
- What is Bitcoin dominance (BTC.D)?
- It's the share of the whole crypto market that is bitcoin: its market cap divided by the total market cap. If BTC.D is 58%, of every 100 dollars invested in crypto, 58 are in bitcoin.
- What does it mean when it rises or falls?
- When dominance rises, bitcoin is doing better than the rest (or falling less): money is flowing into bitcoin. When it falls, other coins gain weight, and when that happens very fast it's called “altseason”. It doesn't say whether the market goes up or down: only who gains weight.
- Why doesn't it match TradingView or CoinMarketCap exactly?
- Because nobody publishes the total market cap for free and everyone adds it up their own way. Here it's the sum of today's 100 largest coins, excluding wrapped tokens and staking derivatives. The shape of the curve is the same; the number can differ by a few tenths.
